Tesla Inc. is recalling over 2 million vehicles in the United States to update its Autopilot driver-assistance system. This action follows a lengthy investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) into the system's safety concerns. The recall, covering nearly all Tesla vehicles on U.S. roads, aims to install new safeguards to ensure drivers remain attentive when using Autopilot.

The recall involves specific models, including Model 3, Model S sedans, Model Y, and Model X all-electric SUVs, produced from October 5, 2012, to December 7, 2023.

The investigation, which started in August 2021, centered around incidents where Tesla vehicles using Autosteer engaged in crashes with stationary emergency vehicles.

Tesla's Autopilot system, which allows cars to steer, accelerate, and brake automatically within their lane, has been under scrutiny for potentially not ensuring adequate driver engagement. Despite Tesla's disagreement with NHTSA's analysis, the company agreed to deploy an over-the-air software update. This update will include additional controls and alerts to further encourage driver responsibility, such as increasing the prominence of visual alerts, simplifying engagement and disengagement of Autosteer, and additional checks upon engaging Autosteer.

Acting NHTSA Administrator Ann Carlson praised Tesla's cooperation, emphasizing the need for driver attention when using the Autopilot system. Tesla, while not agreeing with the NHTSA's findings, is committed to the safety of its vehicles and their users. The recall is a significant step in addressing the potential risks associated with advanced driver-assistance systems and ensuring the safety of all road users??????.
