At least six people reportedly died after a crush occurred outside a stadium in Cameroon during an Africa Cup of Nations match on Jan. 24.

The deadly crush occurred when crowds of fans struggled to get access to the Olembe Stadium in the Cameroonian capital Yaounde to watch the host country's match against Comoros.

Witnesses said that the crush occurred when the stadium stewards closed the gates and stopped allowing people to enter.

A video posted on social media showed fans struggling to enter the venue.

Naseri Paul Biya, governor of the central region of Cameroon, reportedly suggested that the death toll could rise.

Hospital officials said that they received at least 40 people injured in the crush.

According to witnesses, children were among those caught up in the crush.

It has not been made immediately clear if the crush occurred before or during the game.

According to soccer officials, around 50,000 people tried to attend the match.

Although the stadium has the capacity of 60,000 it was not meant to hold over 80% of its capacity due to COVID-19 restrictions.

In a statement, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said it was currently investigating the situation to obtain more details on what happened.

"We are in constant communication with Cameroon government and the Local Organizing Committee," CAF said.

CAF also said that General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba visited injured fans in the hospital.
