NFL Hall of Fame coach and legendary analyst John Madden has died aged 85.

“On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to Virginia, Mike, Joe, and their families. We all know him as the Hall of Fame coach of the Oakland Raiders and broadcaster who worked for every major network, but more than anything, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather," ” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Born in Minnesota, Madden spent the majority of his childhood in Daly City, California, and became an all-conference offensive tackle at Cal Poly. 

Madden's NFL career as a player ended quickly after he suffered a knee injury during his rookie training camp with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Madden was hired by Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis in 1969 and lead the team to its first Super Bowl on Jan. 9, 1977.

Madded departed the Raiders with a 103-32-7 record which included eight playoff appearances and winning seven division titles.

"The Raiders family is deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary John Madden. Few individuals meant as much to the growth and popularity of professional football as Coach Madden, whose impact on the game both on and off the field was immeasurable," said the Raiders. 

After the 1978 season, Madden worked as an analyst for CBS and went on to FOX, ABC, and NBC which cemented his reputation as a football icon after working 11 Super Bowls as a color analyst.

Madden was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006 and won 16 Sports Emmy awards for his broadcasting. 

In 1982, EA Sports approached Madden about creating a football game. 

Madden was skeptical at first but eventually, John Madden Football was released in 1988 for MS-DOS and has lived on as a video game franchise that has sold over 250 million copies in its existence.

Despite his death, his name will live on in future incarnations of EA's franchise and has become the standard for American football video games.
