The English Premier League reported a record 103 COVID-19 cases among club players and staff over the Christmas period.

In a statement, the League announced that out of the 15,186 COVID-19 tests administered between Dec. 20 and Dec. 26 on players and club staff, 103 came back positive.

The results were the highest weekly number recorded since testing figures began being released in May last year.

The League previously reported 90 cases among players and staff between Dec. 13 and Dec. 19.

"The League is continuing to work with clubs to keep people safe by helping mitigate the risks of COVID-19 within their squads. We are also liaising closely with the Government, local authorities, and supporter groups, while being responsive to any future changes to national or local guidance," the League stated.

The League said it would not be releasing the names of the players and teams with positive cases.

The League said that it increased its testing of players and staff to daily lateral flow and twice-weekly PCR tests.

Previously, the League carried out lateral-flow testing twice a week.

The League's COVID-19 emergency measures also include wearing masks while indoors, observing physical distancing, and limiting treatment time.
