The Indonesian National Police fired a police chief and nine other officers Monday over a rioting incident in a soccer stadium that killed at least 125 people.

National Police spokesperson Dedi Prasetyo said Malang police chief Ferli Hidayat and nine other members of an elite police mobile brigade were removed, facing possible dismissal.

"This decision was immediately taken by the National Police Chief after receiving a report on the results of the analysis and evaluation of the special investigation team for the Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy, which was formed by the National Police Chief," Prasetyo said.

On Saturday, the Malang police reportedly fired tear gas after supporters of soccer team Arema FC invaded the pitch after being defeated by rival Persebaya Surabaya.

Amnesty International Indonesia Executive Director Usman Hamid called on authorities to conduct "a swift, thorough, and independent investigation" on the use of tear gas at the stadium.

"This loss of life cannot go unanswered. The police themselves have stated that the deaths occurred after police use of tear gas on the crowd resulted in a stampede at the stadium exits," Hamid said.

The National Police said it has continued investigating a number of police personnel working at Kanjuruhan Malang Stadium to find out the people responsible for the incident.
