The United Kingdom has called for a formal investigation into the "deeply concerning" scenes that unfolded at the Champions League final on May 28 in Paris.

UK Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries and UK Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston urged for an investigation after French police used tear gas and pepper spray against UK football fans who were waiting to enter Stade de France to watch the match between Real Madrid and Liverpool.

"The footage and accounts from Liverpool fans and the media on their entry to the Stade de France last night are deeply concerning," Dorries said.

"I urge [Union of European Football Association] to launch a formal investigation into what went wrong and why, in coordination with stadium staff, the French Police, Fédération Française de Football, Merseyside Police, and Liverpool Football Club," Dorries further said.

The Liverpool Football Club also called for a probe into the "unacceptable issues."

"We are hugely disappointed at the stadium entry issues and breakdown of the security perimeter that Liverpool fans faced," Liverpool said in a statement.

"This is the greatest match in European football and supporters should not have to experience the scenes we have witnessed," Liverpool further said.

UEFA said that it will "review these matters urgently" with French authorities.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin appeared to blame British supporters for the chaos that unfolded.

"Thousands of British 'supporters,' without tickets or with counterfeit tickets, forced entry and sometimes assaulted the stewards," Darmanin said on Twitter on May 28.

However, Merseyside Police said in a statement that officers deployed in Paris "reported the vast majority of fans behaved in an exemplary manner."
