At least 129 people were killed and around 180 injured due to a stampede and riot after a soccer match at a stadium in Malang, East Java. 

East Java police chief, Insp. Gen. Nico Afinta said that the Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya match turned violent after some Arema FC  fans stormed the field after their team lost. 

The police were forced to deploy tear gas to disperse the angry Arema FC fans, which later triggered a stampede.

Police said most of those who died were trampled as they tried to escape through the crowded exits of the stadium.

The angry fans also burned several vehicles including a police truck. 

There is no information yet on the identities of the victims, while no arrests have been announced. 

The chairman of the Arema FC Organizing Committee, Abdul Haris said that a Victim Information Post or Crisis Center would be established to help the victims. 

BRI Liga 1 has suspended games for a week following the incident and the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) has already launched an investigation.

"We're sorry for this incident... this is a regrettable incident that 'injures' our football at a time when supporters can watch football matches from the stadium," said Sports and Youth Minister Zainudin Amali.
