The League of Social Democrats (LSD), one of the few remaining active pro-democracy organizations in Hong Kong, has had its PayPal account suspended due to "extreme risks" that have not been clarified.

On Wednesday afternoon, the LSD posted on its Facebook page that it had received an email from PayPal HK Limited on September 19 informing it of the service termination.

According to LSD's Facebook post, the payment platform stated that "[t]his subject has been studied at length, and our judgment is final" after reviewing your account.

LSD added that PayPal HK has never clarified what the "extreme risks" are.

Chow Ka-fat, LSD's external vice-chairperson, said in a separate report by HKFP that although they are no longer able to accept donations through their PayPal account as of the day they received the email, they are still able to withdraw funds from it.

Chow explained that LSD would typically receive a few thousand Hong Kong dollars via PayPal each month; "now we have one less way [to gather donations]."

When they first heard the news, LSD members were "stunned," according to Chow, but they quickly realized that "it is futile to worry too much."

As more than 50 civil society organizations have disbanded since Beijing implemented the national security law, the LSD is one of the few pro-democracy organizations in Hong Kong that has continued to speak out.
