Mike Grier has become the new and first Black General Manager of the San Jose Sharks, marking history for the National Hockey League.

"I am extremely proud and grateful to be given the opportunity to be the general manager of the San Jose Sharks. Along with my staff, I look forward to the challenge of building a fast, competitive, and hardworking team that Sharks fans will enjoy watching and be proud of. One of the things I remember most about playing in San Jose is the home-ice advantage that our fans bring through their passion and energy, making SAP Center one of the most difficult buildings to play in," Grier said.

Grier fills the position for Joe Will, who had served in the interim role since Doug Wilson had taken a leave of absence in November, eventually stepping down for medical reasons in April.

Jonathan Becher, President of the San Jose Sharks, said Grier "emerged from a pool of dozens of candidates" because of his experience as a player, scout, coach, and executive over the past decades, along with his commitment to building a winning culture in San Jose.

“I hope you do serve as an inspiration to lots of people and that I hope you’re the first and certainly not the last,” Becher told Grier.
