Tiger Woods suffered severe injuries following a car accident on Tuesday in Los Angeles, and is now recovering from surgery according to a statement posted on his Twitter account.

The 45-year-old golf legend was involved in a single-car accident in Los Angeles on Tuesday morning and has suffered severe leg injuries.

Woods has now undergone surgery to his lower right leg and ankle and is awake and responsive, the statement said.

“Mr. Woods suffered significant orthopaedic injuries to his right lower extremity that were treated during emergency surgery by Orthopaedic trauma specialists at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, at level 1 trauma center,” said Dr. Anish Mahajan, Chief Medical Officer at the medical center.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Carlos Gonzalez, who first responded to the scene said, “It’s very fortunate that Mr. Woods was able to come out of this alive.”

Sheriff Alex Villanueva said Woods was traveling on Hawthorne Boulevard at 7:12 am when the car crossed a median, then crossed the opposing lane of road, where it hit a curb. The car had “several rollovers.”

Said part of the road of Hawthorne Boulevard was an accident-prone area because it was "downhill on a curve."
