Finland won their first Olympic men's ice hockey gold after defeat the Russian Olympic Committee at the final on Feb. 20 at the Beijing Games.

Finland made Olympic history after beating the defending champions with a score of 2-0 on the final day of the Games at the National Indoor Stadium.

Finnish Ville Pokka and Hannes Björninen struck goals to put Finland ahead while goalkeeper Harri Sateri blocked  17 shots from the Russians.

The gold victory marked an unbeaten run in the competition for Finland, who have medaled in five of the last seven Olympics without ever standing on the top spot of the podium.

"On this day, we're the best hockey country in the world," Finnish forward Harry Pesonen said.

Finland Captain Valtteri said Filppula said, "Hockey is a big thing in Finland. This is for all of us for sure. We have come close a couple of times and it is finally nice to get the first one."
