In a move blending sports with entertainment, the National Hockey League (NHL) has announced plans to host the 2024 draft at The Sphere in Las Vegas, a state-of-the-art venue acclaimed as the world's largest spherical structure. This event marks the last centralized draft before the NHL transitions to a decentralized format.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, speaking after the league's Board of Governors meeting, expressed enthusiasm for the draft's prospects at the new location. The Sphere, which opened in September, promises a unique and dramatic setting for the event, potentially enhancing its appeal and viewership.

The decision to hold the draft in Las Vegas, the market of the NHL’s most recent franchise addition, aligns with the league's progressive approach to hosting major events in iconic locations. Bettman indicated that contracts are in the process of being finalized and emphasized the potential for the draft to be both a captivating and fun experience.

The league also announced an increase in the salary cap to $87.7 million for the 2024-25 season. Additionally, plans are underway for a mini-international tournament in February 2025, featuring four countries as a precursor to the 2026 Olympics. However, ongoing negotiations between the NHL, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are required to finalize player participation in the Olympics.

This strategic move by the NHL underscores its commitment to innovation and fan engagement, promising a memorable draft experience in the vibrant city of Las Vegas.
